But The Lab Rats can draw a straight line from the free jazz of artists like Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman to their own highly electronic, highly improvisational compositions. These guys play with heart and a twisty sense of musical irony. They can take a piece of music and make you reexamine all your preconceived notions of form. Love it or hate it. Just don't call it jazz.
