The music scene - the bands

Skip's Tavern features some of the finest
talent in the Bay Area seven nights a week.
Here's a rundown of bands appearing at the club:

Blues Jam - Regi Harvey & Thunder Blue
This jam is ground zero of a cutting-edge musical scene that has grown up here at Skip's. It attracts some of the finest talent in San Francisco, and several bands working The City's club scene were formed around Skip's oval bar on Sunday nights. The music is top-flight, but the always-friendly Harvey is more than willing to give newcomers a shot.

Regi Harvey Unplugged
Unplug, turn-down, leave the drums at home and what have you got? Regi Harvey ''lite.'' All the musical intensity of Regi's Sunday night jam - with half the volume. High-power talent plus low-power amplification means you never know what to expect. But it's guaranteed to satisfy your musical appetite.

Jazz Jam - Hosted by Regi Harvey
The Jazz Jam hosted by Regi Harvey is one of San Francisco’s hottest spots for jazz improv. Regi has continued the tradition established many years ago by drummer and horn player Johnny Serrano. If you can play and are into the REAL DEAL of the jazz feel, bring your horn, sticks or axe… bring your book, your notes or your notions and Blow, CAT, Blow.

Toby's Oldies and More
DJ Toby Cain spins classic Motown and more. He's got one of the most eclectic album collections in the civilized world and his Wednesday session has become a popular after-work stop. Come hear tunes you haven't heard in decades - and a few we're sure you've never heard.

King's Night - All Star Blues Jam
The Shadow Man plays guitar, does vocals and runs an invitational jam that presents some of the spicier Bay Area talent in a relaxed fun filled atmosphere. He’s been playing since the Beatles turned him on and has been performing at Skip’s around 6 years. He was a part of legendary SF groups The Bandidos, the Brass Knights and the Giles Brothers Band (Brothers Studio). He is the unofficial mayor of Bernal Heights.

The Lab Rats
Guitar virtuoso Michael Bockelman says "don't call it jazz." But The Lab Rats can draw a straight line from the free jazz of artists like Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman to their own highly electronic, highly improvisational compositions. These guys play with heart and a twisty sense of musical irony. They can take a piece of music and make you reexamine all your preconceived notions of form. Love it or hate it. Just don't call it jazz.

Edna Love and Special Guests
Ms Love, one of the folks that helped to establish the Skip’s music scene, is a powerhouse R&B, Blues and Funk vocalist who can show anyone what they came here for… a Real GOOD Time!! Her various groups the Love Toys, Dangerous Toys and Passion appear regularly at The Blue Lamp (San Francisco and Sacramento), and are available for weddings and private parties. Edna likes to present other performers who share the gift, and brings her audiences some of the best singers and players in SF.

Jose Simioni
Exquisite jazz chops, searing metal licks, wailin' blues, nasty funk, way-out fusion, grinding rock 'n' rock - Jose is a superb guitarist. You name it, and he can play it - with his own personal twist, of course - like last Monday night, when he was using a Heineken bottle for his guitar slide ...

Michael Lee & The OG's
Lead by guitarist Michael Lee, this band features Jethro "The Jet" Miller playing saxophones galore, the legendary A.J. on guitar, Johnny on bass and many other inspiring players ‘over 40’! Well-seasoned blues and R&B put out by talented gents who are young at heart.

Robbie MacGregor et al
The brainchild of Guitarist Robbie MacGregor and vocalist Edna Love, this band is Hot. They have put together a smokin’ Jazz/Funk-Fusion band that covers the waterfront. Soulful sounds stir the spirit when Mac brings his troupe to town.

Regi Harvey's Thunder Blue Allstars
Regi Harvey’s Thunder Blue is a roaring, rolling thunderous blues ensemble with Michael Bockelman, Lead and rhythm guitar; Tobias Caine, Drums and vocals and Kirk Bowman, Bass backing Regi up for gigs around the Bay Area. The Sunday jam at Skip’s Tavern is their main locus.

Doni Harvey with Special Guests
Guitarist and bassist Doni Harvey says it best: "I am a musician, singer, composer, arranger and producer. And here is why: "I became a musician because I have always loved the sound of music. My fascination became an obsession. I studied Classical music all the way through grade school into college. Simultaneously cultivating interests in Jazz, R&B, and the Blues to name a few. My destiny is to play and compose music and to teach others what I have learned. My objective is to be recognized as a professional musician, singer, composer, arranger and producer."

Regi Harvey's Example
Regi Harvey’s Example is the streamlined quartet Regi needed to present his Heavy Rock sound. Kirk Bowman on Bass and Tobias Caine on drums join Regi Harvey (lead vocals and guitar) and Tony Simons, Jimi Hendrix’ cousin (guitar).

Chris Bell
This impressive guitarist is an East Coast transplant from the Boston area who is starting to gain notoriety playing area clubs as a very fine guitarist. Bell is a BMI songwriter and is the founding member of Stiff Upper Lip, who kicks out their own unique style of 100% blues. Influenced by legendary players as Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as Albert and BB King. At first listen one can hear the ability of one of the top modern blues interpreters. Kidd Cook
More of a rock and roll with a tinge of the 60's "Mod" Pop R&B sound than a blues band. And yet very Entertaining and a whole lot of fun. Just imagine a Beatles kind of sound in a R&B club. That's Kidd Cook.
