The music scene - the jam sessions

MONDAY - Regi Harvey Unplugged (7:30 pm)
TUESDAY - Jazz Jam - Hosted by Regi Harvey(8 pm)
THURSDAY - King's Night - All Star Blues Jam (6 pm)

Every Sunday since 1996, Thunder Blue has held court at Skip's Tavern in Bernal Heights, hosting one of the longest running, most successful jam sessions in San Francisco.
Running the musical gamut from blues to funk to jazz and rock, the jam reflects the diverse parade of working pros who have made the neighborhood bar their weekly clubhouse. For the musicians the session is equal parts social club and proving ground -- an incubator for one of the most original sounds to emerge from San Francisco since the Summer of Love.

The fruits of this musical melting pot can be heard not only in Regi's music, but in the recording of the many artists who frequent the jam. One benchmark of its success is the many bands that have formed from connections made around Skip's antique oval bar - groups such as Spoonful of Blues, Five-Seven, The OGs, Blue Wail and, of course, The Lab Rats and Regi Harvey's Example.
At the center of this musical universe is Regi Harvey, dubbed the "Colonel of Bernal" by the Skip's regulars. ''I'm trying hard to succeed and I know that I can't do that without other people,'' Harvey says. ''I'm sick of some of the best musicians in the city working so hard and not getting recognized. That's why I'm running jams; to hook the musicians up. Hopefully they'll make something out of that.''
